THE FRANKTON WATER TOWER

THE FRANKTON WATER TOWER

A landmark for over 50 years on Lake Road, the Frankton Water Tower survived a direct hit from a tornado in 1948 but was unable to escape the wreckers’ ball in 1966, when this photo was taken. Remarkably graceful for a concrete structure from the early 20th century, the tower had a viewing platform at the top affording superb views of the city and surrounding countryside. But it was deemed to be obsolete by the people who made such decisions and demolished over a couple of weeks in late 1966. A shame, really.

Do you remember when the tower came down? Did you get to see the view from there before it was demolished. We’d love to hear about it.
