UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO’S FRESHMAN YEAR

REMEMBER NZ’S FIRST REALLY BIG FESTIVAL?

After 8 years of lobbying, planning and fundraising, Waikato’s own University opened in 1964 in a handful of buildings on former farmland on the outskirts of Hamilton.

In the first year there were only two schools of studies, Humanities and Social Sciences, with limited subjects offered to only 150 students. They shared the campus with the Waikato Teachers College.

The orientation parties may have been a bit quieter than in later years, but we suspect there are still a few good stories waiting to be told.

Did you go to University of Waikato in the 60s or 70s? We’d love to hear about it.
