REMEMBER THESE STICKERS?
In 1979 the Muldoon government introduced the Carless Days scheme as a way of cutting the country’s fuel bill to save dwindling foreign currency reserves.
Universally unpopular and hugely unsuccessful, Carless Days lasted less than a year and arguably put more cars on the road. Many locals bought a second car so they could avoid having a day without transport and exemption stickers were easy to come by.
